Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. "America of Yesterday as Reflected in the Journal of John Davis Long" offers an intimate and detailed perspective on the political and social landscape of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century America. Edited by Lawrence Shaw Mayo, this collection of journal entries provides a firsthand account of the life and career of John Davis Long, who served as the Governor of Massachusetts and the United States Secretary of the Navy during the Spanish-American War. The diary entries span several decades, capturing the evolution of a statesman and the changing tides of a nation. Through Long's personal reflections, readers gain insight into the inner workings of the federal government, the complexities of naval administration during a period of international conflict, and the nuances of New England political life. Beyond his official duties, Long's journals reveal the thoughts of a man deeply engaged with his community and family, offering a humanizing look at a prominent public figure.
