Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. "The Geographical Conceptions of Columbus" is a rigorous critical study of the intellectual and cartographic framework that guided Christopher Columbus during his historic voyages. Written by George E. Nunn, this work meticulously examines the geographical theories of the late 15th century, specifically addressing how Columbus perceived the size of the Earth, the extent of the Eurasian landmass, and the location of the legendary "Indies."The text delves into several primary problems: the determination of the length of a terrestrial degree, the route Columbus followed on his first voyage, the identification of major landmarks, and the search for the Continental Strait. By analyzing contemporary maps and primary sources, Nunn provides a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of maritime knowledge and the misconceptions that inadvertently led to the European discovery of the Americas. This volume serves as an essential resource for scholars of the Age of Discovery, historical geography, and navigation, offering a clear-eyed look at the scientific and speculative world of one of history's most influential explorers. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
