Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. "Robert Stephen Hawker, a Study of His Thought and Poetry" offers a comprehensive exploration into the intellectual and creative life of one of the 19th century's most idiosyncratic literary figures. Robert Stephen Hawker, famously the Vicar of Morwenstow, was a man whose life and work were deeply intertwined with the rugged landscape of Cornwall and the traditions of the Anglican Church. This scholarly study by Margaret Florence Burrows delves into the depths of Hawker's theological convictions and his distinct poetic voice. The work examines the development of Hawker's thought, from his early academic influences to the mystical and sacramental themes that permeate his mature verse. Known for his legendary eccentricity and his deep commitment to his parishioners, Hawker's poetry reflects a unique synthesis of high-church Anglicanism, local folklore, and a romantic sensitivity to nature. Burrows provides a nuanced analysis of major works such as "The Quest of the Sangraal," positioning Hawker within the broader context of Victorian literature and religious thought. This study serves as an essential resource for those interested in the history of English poetry, the Oxford Movement, and the cultural heritage of the West Country. By focusing on the interplay between his religious duties and his literary output, the book illuminates the enduring legacy of a priest-poet who remains a captivating figure in English letters. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
