Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. "The Stream of English Biography" provides a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of biographical writing in the English language. Curated and introduced by John Calvin Metcalf, this volume serves as both an anthology and a critical survey, tracing the development of the genre from its early forms to the more sophisticated narratives of the early 20th century. By selecting representative biographies, Metcalf illustrates how the art of life-writing has shifted in focus, style, and purpose over the centuries. The work includes a substantial historical and critical introduction that frames the selected readings within their cultural and literary contexts. Metcalf examines the lives of notable figures through the lenses of the authors who immortalized them, offering readers a dual perspective on the subjects themselves and the craft of the biographers. This collection is an essential resource for students of English literature and history, providing insight into the human impulse to record and interpret the lives of great individuals. From classical influences to modern psychological approaches, "The Stream of English Biography" remains a significant study of one of literature's most enduring and popular genres. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
