Johann Wolfgang von Goethe contributed significantly to comparative biology and systematic theory, and he is acknowledged as both a scientist and a writer. Goethe’s area of scientific interest was plant and animal morphology; his methods are familiar to many of today’s taxonomists. What many do not appreciate is that he used his methodology with non-biological forms – rocks, landforms, colour and clouds. Although not successful in geology, his approach stimulated 18th and 19th century physics. The book provides 21st century context for Goethe’s scientific work, as well as a compendium for scholars interested in 18th century and early 19th century science. Key Features Compares Goethe’s ideas to modern systematics, physics, geology and geography Investigate how literature and architecture of Goethe’s time have influenced his scientific studies Explores the role science played in Goethe’s non-scientific works Documents Goethe’s own experiences in Switzerland, Italy and France and how that influenced his views of botany, geology and geography Includes a bibliography of Goethe’s publications and an account of his fraught relationship with his publishers Provides an account of Goethe’s critics during his lifetime and beyond.

He has written over 100 scientific articles, including 8 books, a series of popular science articles and opinion pieces for high-ranking journals. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Biogeography and Australian Systematic Botany, and is a reviewer for over 30 journals. In 2010, Malte and his co-author Lynne R. Parenti were recipients of the Smithsonian’s Secretary Research Prize for the text-book Comparative Biogeography.

Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. This book places Goethes scientific method into context for 21st-century scientists and science. Moreover, Goethes Art of Science is an excellent compendium for scientists interested in 18th-century and early 19th-century geology, colour theory and comparative biology.Few scientists realise that Goethe contributed a significant body of work on geology, the theory of colour, and comparative biology. Goethes main concern was developing his scientific method called Morphology, which involved observing and describing form, whether it be minerals, rocks, the interaction of colour, or organisms, the latter which many taxonomists would be familiar with today. Goethes scientific legacy was hampered by his Neptunist ideas in geology, and his criticism of Newton on colour theory. Nevertheless, his view that our interaction as observers with natural phenomena was a fundamental principle that can be applied across many different scientific fields. In order to raise the awareness of Goethes scientific method this book will:Provide a detailed description of his method, MorphologyInvestigate his geological writings and how they were hampered by his Neptunist thinkingDemonstrate his Theory of Colours and how Anschauung and the Urphenomenon were crucial to his methodFollow the development of Goethes plant and animal morphologyExplore what Goethe thought about his own scientific legacy and provide a list of his scientific achievements and honoursProvide new English translations of Goethes writings J. W. von Goethe contributed to comparative biology and systematic theory. He is acknowledged as both a scientist and a writer.
