Computer Graphics for Theatre Design: Practical CGI Techniques for Scenic, Costume, and Lighting Designers explores techniques and technologies for incorporating computer graphics in scenography.
The book offers practical guidance to create simple yet effective and attractive design work. It features instructions on producing professional-quality computer images, videos, and interactions using open-source software and other software that is available at no cost. Also included are tips on new means of collaboration, preparing a digital portfolio, and more. The text provides instruction in 2D sketching and painting for costume, scenic, and lighting design, as well as 3D modeling and rendering for scenic design and lighting visualization. Lastly, it discusses using computer graphics and simulations not only to produce and communicate traditional designs, but to be incorporated directly on stage in media-enriched productions.
Computer Graphics for Theatre Design offers instructions in all major areas of scenographic techniques and how skills used in one area can be applied to the others. By providing guidance useful to all three main areas of design, a single, comprehensive class on computer graphics can be offered to students, or traditional classes in each area can use specific sections, all in the same text. The book will also be of interest to professionals looking to introduce CGI techniques in their design work.

Mark Reaney is a scenographer and retired professor in the Scenography Program within the University of Kansas’ Department of Theatre and Dance, where he taught classes in computer-aided design for over 25 years. He pioneered the use of CGI in scenography and virtual reality as a scenic medium and directed the Institute for the Exploration of Virtual Realities (i.e. VR). Beginning in 1988, he has written extensively on the subject and spoken at venues across the U.S. and Europe. Current projects include new VR recreations of historic theatres. Long afflicted with MS, Mark is always exploring ways in which digital tech can aid scenographers with disabilities. Documentation of the work in CGI/VR/Theatre projects, productions, and publications can be found at www.ievr.org.
