In April 1945, American forces were sweeping eastwards toward Berlin, in part advancing across territory that would eventually become part of the Soviet Occupation Zone. REINER DECHER received a doctorate degree in aeronautical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a retired aeronautical engineering professor with a career at the University of Washington and industrial experience at The Boeing Company, all of which was focused on aircraft propulsion. He is also the son of one of the engineers who experienced the post-war turmoil, came to the US, and worked productively in the field of aviation engines. The contributing authors went through the experiences described here and documented them for historians to remember. The author lives in Bellevue, Washington having spent a considerable fraction of his retirement authoring books on the history and the technology associated with aircraft engines.
