Synopsis

The book chronicles the battalion’s experiences within 13 Infantry Brigade, 5 British Division during WW2. It gives a comprehensive and detailed account of the battalion’s activities during that time. The battalion, under command GHQ of the BEF during the ‘Phoney War’, moved south, to provide flank protection to the armoured attack against Axis forces, west of Arras. A hasty move north saw them form a blocking line along the Ypres – Comines canal to allow those British units, still engaged to the south, to retire on Dunkirk. Following a period of re-fitting, at home, the battalion deployed to India. From here, they transferred into Paiforce Command, before undertaking intensive training within Eighth Army, for Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. On the Italian mainland, the battalion closely followed up the Germans retirement onto its Winter Line, taking part in Phase 1, of the ‘First Battle of Cassino’. On being relieved, the battalion was sent into the Anzio Bridgehead. Withdrawn from operations, they sailed to Egypt, and were transferred to 38 (Irish) Brigade (78 Infantry Division). They returned to the front line in the September of 1944, once again, enduring four months in a hostile mountain environment. Participating in the 1945 Spring Offensive, they advanced out of 8th Indian Division’s bridgehead over the Santerno River, and advanced toward the River Reno where they moved to ‘cut the road’ running north, out of Argenta, closing what was termed the ‘Argenta Gap’. From here they perused enemy forces as they fell back to the Po River. The final surrender of German forces in Italy, saw the battalion move into Austria, taking up a peacekeeping role, before their Colours were laid-up in 1949. Included are 11 Google Earth based maps, 32 B/W contemporary images, most not published before, 12 modern day views and a list of fallen.
