He has been a Senator for NSW; Government Senate Whip; Minister for Aboriginal Affairs; Minister for Health; Minister for Education; Minister assisting Minister for National Development and Energy; Professor of Community Medicine at the University of NSW; Emeritus Professor; Commissioner in Australian Law Reform Commission; Chairman of Australian Sports Drug Agency; Chancellor of Australian National University and a distinguished Fellow of Royal Society of NSW.
