Lü Shuxiang (1904–1998), a renowned Chinese linguist, served as the director of the Institute of Linguistics at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and as the president of the Chinese Linguistics Society. He devoted his life to language teaching and research and is regarded as one of the key founders of modern Chinese linguistics. His main area of study was Chinese grammar, in which he made pioneering contributions to the construction of the grammatical system as well as to theoretical and methodological approaches.
