Synopsis

I support less waste. But when did sending an order become so complicated?

Running a business should mean creating useful products, reaching customers and enjoying the opportunity to grow. For me, selling into the European Union increasingly meant paperwork, compliance costs and difficult decisions about whether the next order was worth accepting.

The PPWR Packaging Compliance Burden is my personal account of how EU packaging rules, extended producer responsibility (EPR) and the wider demands of cross-border trade affected my UK business—and why the combined burden led me to stop exporting to the EU.

I explain the frustration behind the forms: learning unfamiliar requirements, working through different national arrangements, facing rising shipping costs and weighing the risk of customs delays, returns and refunds against the profit left from a sale.

Inside, I explore:

• What PPWR—the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation—means, and how packaging obligations differ from product safety and customs requirements.
• EPR registration, representation and the administration involved in serving different EU markets.
• The wider pressures of GPSR, VAT, IOSS, customs declarations and the €3 customs duty on qualifying low-value imports.
• The time spent learning and managing requirements that never appears on an invoice.
• Why protecting products and avoiding wasteful packaging already makes commercial sense.
• My belief that businesses introducing very little packaging should be protected by meaningful thresholds if these requirements remain.

I recognise the need to reduce waste and respect the professionals working in compliance and recycling. My disagreement is with the cost and complexity I encountered, and how difficult they made it to keep serving customers.

Written for business owners, online sellers, makers and craftspeople who recognise these struggles, this book puts the frustration, disappointment and lost opportunities into words.

A personal experience supported by official references, with opinions clearly distinguished from factual explanations. Regulations and guidance can change; this book reflects the research dates stated inside and is not legal advice.
