What price would you pay to uphold the truth?
It is February 1587. In England, Mary, Queen of Scots, is beheaded on the orders of the Privy Council. In Spain, Philip II plans his ‘Enterprise of England’: an invasion to remove Queen Elizabeth and reinstate the Catholic faith. As rumours of all-out war circulate, Genoa’s bankers and merchants wait - and watch. What they do not know is that a ‘cold war’ is already under way, and their city – Europe’s leading financial centre - is a key battleground.

David Breakell was born and grew up in Sussex, England. After his schooldays, he read law at Worcester College, Oxford. While there, he spent probably too much time on student journalism, filmmaking and fencing for the university. After completing his degree, he spent a summer travelling to all corners of the USA, taking casual jobs between sightseeing. On returning to the UK, he pursued various career options but finally decided to qualify as a lawyer professionally. Rather to his surprise, he found the practice of law far more entertaining than its study. Most of his legal career was spent in the City of London, aside from two years' secondment to Abu Dhabi, and it culminated with nearly twenty years as a banking partner in a global law firm. David is married with grown-up children and lives close to the sea, back in Sussex. He is now working on his second novel in the "Alchemist" series, which follows the path of Nico Castello through even more turbulent times. He is also researching a story about his two grandfathers, set against their very different experiences in the First World War. When not writing, or enjoying life in his home county, he likes taking longish road trips, especially in Italy and Germany.
