Synopsis

Jack Lawley was born into a mining family and lived in the North East of England during the early years of the 20th century.

At this time communities were forged through the available employment and became close knit. For the Industry, the speedier and cheaper extraction of coal was the constant aim. For the miners and their families, the pay could be comparatively good, although the working conditions underground were always difficult, dark and dangerous. You needed to know you could rely on your 'mates' to keep you safe.

The Industrial Revolution brought advances in machinery and, particularly with the railways, the speed of distribution. Travel, the pub, football, the Durham Gala all brought colour into their lives, although the contrast with the surrounding farming families, who had been there for generations, was always stark.

This book follows Jack through his formative years, the people he meets, the triumphs and the tragedies, and shows, above all, the human side of those distant days.
