Phil Carroll describes his Naval career from joining Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in April 1984, training in the Fleet and as a Probationary Hydrographic Surveyor. Surveys around the UK coast in Fox, Naval Party 1008 and Beagle, deployments to Atlantic and Indian Oceans in Hecla. He stood by the latter stages of Scott's construction. His appointment ashore at BRNC as a Divisional Officer was rewarding and satisfying: turning young folks into Naval officers, preparing them for their own careers in the 'Mob'.

Gosport-born Phil Carroll graduated from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and joined Blue Star Ship Management in September 1980 as a Deck Cadet. After four years of global voyages on merchantmen, described in his best-selling book Under a Big Blue Star, he earned his Second Mate's Foreign-Going 'ticket'. In April 1984, he joined the Royal Navy, sub-specialised as a Hydrographic Survey Officer and served in Ocean Survey Ships and Coastal Survey Vessels. His 25-year career included three consecutive overseas appointments and an operational deployment to Kosovo. Returning to UK after a nine-year absence, his last RN job was as Arms Control Inspector, conducting 'Conventional Forces Europe' Treaty missions into ex-Warsaw Pact nations. In mid-2008, he retired from the RN but, headhunted by the Royal Australian Navy, served for a decade until retirement aged 60. He is married to Lynne, an author and poet. They returned to UK in late-2018 and live blissfully in glorious Devon countryside.
