Edinburgh 1738 - a city on the cusp of change.
Among its citizens, young lawyer Nicol Euart. Following the death of his father, Nicol is left responsible for the fortunes of his family: his three artistic sisters Isobell, Margaret and Catriona; his strict Presbyterian mother; and his troublesome Jacobite brother, Willie.
The family’s trials begin when they encounter an unscrupulous merchant, Master Rennie, and his dissolute son, who, over the course of several months, are to threaten the life or honour of several of the siblings. When Rennie enlists his aid in a dubious enterprise, Nicol is compelled to take sides in the simmering conflict between Jacobites and Whigs. Fearing for the safety of his family and country, he embarks on a dangerous endeavour to bring down his enemy: one that will cause an irreparable breach with his brother. Events reach their climax on Ravensheugh Sands with the arrest of Rennie and the recognition of Nicol’s services by the powers that be.
His sisters, too, through their creative pursuits, are caught up in the jostling of progressive ideas and reactionary forces that permeate Edinburgh society. Whether facing domestic trials and public tribulations or developing professional ties and romantic relationships, all the young people are tested to the full, and all must discover their own morality of the heart before the novel’s conclusion.
A story similar in vein to Robert Louis Stevenosn's David Balfour novels.
