Synopsis

Where you find sickness, a Yaksha has been unleashed.

A mess of crusty eyes has sent Ashan’s friends home from school. He realizes this is no ordinary outbreak. Something hungry has tucked itself away in the folds of his backpack.

It’s ancient. It’s watching. And now that it’s through the front door, it’s in the air.

Its gaze is fixed on his family.

Yaksha are creatures of Buddhist and Hindu mythology. The Sri Lankan Yaksha are nature spirits whose presence is felt through sickness. To subdue these forces, people perform rituals that use loud drums, dance, and natural disinfectants and medicines (tulsi leaves, vinegar, limes, salt, tumeric, etc). THE EYES OF ESS-VAHA is a short story, a slice of life that explores the cultural influences that overlay the life of immigrants in cities like Toronto.
