Death at Fort York: A Beatrix Forster archaeological murder mystery
Back at their home in Toronto after the devastating murder of one of their students at the medieval Sanctuary of San Miguel in Spain, Beatrix, an archaeological illustrator, and Bill, an archaeology professor, try to return to their normal lives. Bill is anxious to show Beatrix his recent findings from the San Miguel cemetery excavations, but their curiosity about the skeletons is cut short when they learn that Bill’s colleague and friend, Professor Evelyn Volk, has gone missing. Despite Bill’s retirement, the head of the Department of Anthropology asks him to provisionally take over supervision of field school students at the Fort York excavations until Evelyn returns. Eager for an excursion to break up the monotony of daily life at home, Beatrix and Muffin, the wire fox terrier, accompany Bill to the site in downtown Toronto. Bill’s expertise is welcomed at the dig as historic human remains, believed to be burials from the War of 1812, were uncovered only shortly before Evelyn’s disappearance. Left to explore the grounds of Fort York unsupervised while Bill and Beatrix busy themselves with the excavations, Muffin makes a startling discovery that will rattle the University of Toronto’s academic community.
