As a Professor in Mechanical Engineering for GATE Coaching Institutes, Brig Raghavendra Rao has been coaching graduate students – waiting for a job – for over a decade. The waiting period (for a job) often stretches to over a year. To secure a job, most students apply to recruiting agencies, apply on line on “Internet Job Boards or Bulletins” and answer advertisements in the local newspaper. This process is neither assuring nor certain, but they have no other options. They wait and hope (and some sit for the GATE exam!).Brig Rao decided that he was in an excellent position to help these students. The waiting period could be gainfully utilised.Firstly, students should prepare a professional and compelling CV. It must be relevant and tailored for the job applied for. Secondly, students must assess what type of a personality they have and what types of jobs would suit them. This can be done with a few thought experiments and some information available on-line. Students must only apply for jobs which are relevant to them and for which they are qualified, and have an aptitude for. Applying to all (even irrelevant) jobs leads to dissatisfaction and de-moralisation – best avoided.Students must also do some research to identify as to which recruiting agencies deal with freshly graduated students and seek their assistance – not apply to all recruiting agencies.Students need to keep themselves abreast of employment opportunities on a daily basis – hence need to follow a proper scanning routine – and use reliable newspapers and on line resources for the same.During the spare time available, students must acquire additional skill sets for jobs in their sphere of interest – by doing courses relevant to their domain. They may also consider taking up a part-time job, or doing voluntary work – both of which not only increase their experience but also gives them additional exposure to the outside world. This book explains exactly how to do all the above, by themselves, sitting at home – but by doing some real work! This is the second part of a two book series. The first part deals with “Developing the skills required before facing an interview” and the second, this book, deals with the “Process of searching for a job in a professional manner”.
