Kayla Whitner is a believer, a writer, a poet, an artist, a daughter, a sister, a friend, an influencer, an explorer, a practitioner of healthy living and exercise and a never-finished work of art. A 20-year-old from Atlanta, she’s pursuing a creative media degree at The University of Alabama. For most of the last decade she’s confined herself and her public identity to being an athlete. But, now, through poetry, writing, music and prose, she is looking inward, taking time to grow and understand her “true self.” Today, she finds joy in an overabundance of forgiveness. She finds great power, strength, peace and joy in openness, honesty, transparency and inclusion. By sharing her work for the first time she shares her vulnerability, opening up about mistakes and lessons learned the hard way. After much prayer and much evolution, Kayla has discovered gratitude for her present state and for her evolution. This piece aims to share who Kayla is becoming.
