For Light's Third Volume, prompts will identify some stages in creativeproduction. The third prompt considers the meanings of what it is to "focus."Focus is a complicated thing. It’s target-oriented. What is put into focus in acomplex photograph often leaves compelling evidence of other things that remainin the frame unfocused. Or it invokes things and people who have been croppedout and so excluded from sight but maybe not from immediate recognition.Focus is like stage magic. Sometimes it’s all about what can be illuminated to thehighest, finest degree in all its detail. Sometimes it’s about a sleight-of-hand thatsurprises the reader by leaving her with an object, an image, an impression of thetarget that she hadn’t anticipated. And sometimes it’s about showing the tricksbehind the illusion of magic. It’s art that doesn’t merely reveal the processes ofselection and exclusion. It’s art that shows the artist un-erased from art’sproduction, doing all the things that startle and amaze the side-show spectators.
