It began simply enough; a small meeting in Munich in September 1919. World War One had ended and Germany was bitter, as was Hans Becker, ten months back from the front lines. He, his wife Ruth, and their friend Anna, the daughter of a Jewish grocer, experience the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany. They quickly learn that their future under Hitler will not be a bed of roses. As the Nazis gain power, step by step, and becoming more inhuman year by year, the pressure grows on our young friends to cope with their lives. The book explains the individual history of twenty-four mileposts in Hitler’s rise. It begins with him as an unknown, a nobody, attending his first meeting of the German Workers’ Party. It culminates nineteen years later with the horror of Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) in November 1938 with Hitler as Führer of all Germany and Austria. As we follow the history, we also follow our friends lives as they react to it and live it.
