Growing up in San Francisco, California, Akemi had experienced many challenges in her young adult life. Learning disabilities, a mental health diagnosis and racism were just a few of the obstacles Akemi identified as thieves that stole her happiness from her. Combine those with her mother’s overbearing and toxic competitive behavior, Akemi’s unsuccessful one semester of college, her own inabilities to maintain quality employment, and growing up in the shadows of her perfect and successful siblings! Akemi considered herself a loser and destined to fail at life. With nothing to lose, Akemi decides to move to the Midwest city of St. Louis, Missouri where some of her extended family are located. Although Akemi doesn’t have high hopes for her new life, she feels that nothing could be worse than the pain and constant reminders of her failures in California. Feeling destined to fail, her life begins to change when she is reunited with her cousin Kim, who invites Akemi to push her limits and believe in herself. With supportive family, friends, teachers and a good psychiatrist Akemi plunges into college again and finds she not only succeeds but excels beyond her wildest dreams. As Akemi enjoys her new success, she truly believes that nothing can stop her. Just as Akemi is gaining confidence in herself, her schizophrenia begins to show itself again. Soon Akemi begins to question if her hallucinations and delusional thinking is something more than a diagnosis and wonders if it could be spiritual or perhaps supernatural. Warned that this kind of thinking could be dangerous, Akemi is forced to make a decision that will alter her life and destiny. If she is right, then she will know what she must do. But if she is wrong then it could cost her everything including her life.
