Synopsis

This experimental study focuses in the determination of an alternative for bitumen which will fulfill the different properties of bitumen in terms of strength, flexibility and durability. This work presents the use of lignin and crumb rubber as a “fractional” replacement or alternative of bitumen. An attempt was made to access the stabilization of modified bitumen by Standard Marshal Mix design, Penetration test, and Ductility test. The ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) test was also conducted to check the quality and strength of prepared samples. In this experimental study various quantity of crumb rubber (from 2% to 10% by weight of bitumen) was used to prepare samples to calculate the optimum value of crumb rubber at OBC of 5%. Further samples were prepared using lignin at various percentages (from 5% to 25% by weight of bitumen) and 6% crumb rubber to calculate the optimum value of the mix. It was discovered that the optimum value of mix was found out to be 20% lignin and 6% crumb rubber. The tests showed that the modified sample has more stability as compared to plain bitumen sample and bitumen was replaced by 26%.
