Synopsis

This paper explores High Functioning Autism (HFA) and Asperger's Syndrome (AS) within adulthood. It looks at challenges and strengths experienced by people on the spectrum briefly. In considering the differences of Theory of Mind (TOM) of HFA/AS to someone without the condition. The TOM of someone on the spectrum will be different to someone who is neurotypical (NT), in other words, not on the Autism Spectrum. These differences play a role in communications, hence relationships. How someone on the spectrum sees him/her self in the world and communicates is done in the most literal sense. Therefore mind games that many NTs play in order to pursue romance is often unrecognisable amongst HFA/AS. Therefore, this paper looks into the possibilities and practicalities of starting a romantic relationship. These are just some of the questions: 'How do you know when you are in love?', 'Do you think that being attracted to someone is the same as being in love with someone?’,'Could you fall in love without being sexually attracted to someone?’, 'Have you ever had a crush on (fancied, been infatuated by) someone without having those feelings returned?’, 'On a scale of 1 being not important, and 5 being crucial, how important is it to you to be in a romantic relationship?', 'What do you look for in a partner?', 'If your companion (romantic partner) is the right person, and you are in love, does it matter what gender they are to you’. Answers to these questions and more bring some light on the challenges, and how so much of it relates to stress and anxieties over their own issues.
