Synopsis

If you are a student of any aspect of criminal behaviour or crime and punishment, then this is a book for you. The content is based on a dissertation, and some essays, the author submitted for his 2001 Master's degree in Police and Criminal Justice System, and he has updated it and re-titled it. He sets out his own experiences as a criminal lawyer, and his notes throw into focus the issues which plague the current appalling state of the prison service in the UK. He has also been submitting his notes to some high-level government offices, but is frustrated by the time it seems to take to move anybody to do something positive about the enormous expense needed to keep so many people in prison, to impress upon them that prison does not work in many cases, and why the accent should be - but is not - on educating offenders out of criminogenic bahaviour, and not just 'warehousing' them. This is a very useful little book, it provokes thought and discusses numerous aspects of the CJS which need serious attention. The author has clearly taken the business to heart; his comments are thought-provoking, sometimes contentious, worth reading, and contain some alarming statistics. A good introduction to the subject, and one which should find a place on the desks of everybody who works in the Ministry of Justice. Well written; a good read. Highly recommended.
