The collection of curiosities comprising this book is not an assortment of strange physical objects. Rather, it is a selection of stories featuring certain people I have known over the years. Their carefully curated stories come directly from my very personal, inner cabinet of curiosities--that is, from inside my memory.Referring to these stories as ‘curiosities’, may create a false impression that I am mocking or demeaning the assorted characters who people them. Not at all. To me, all of us humans--are curious beings, both individually and collectively. As with a wooden cabinet filled with physical curiosities, these are all people whose stories draw me. Whether I like or loathe the persons, I am invariably curious about who they are and what makes them behave as they do. Always I wonder, What can I learn from this individual? It is in this sense that I apply the term, ‘cabinet of curiosities’ to this collection of people’s stories—including, of course, those of my own fictionalized persona, Alicia.Some of these people are very real, indeed. Others, in the interests of protecting personal identities, are re-constructed from a mix of various individuals I have known. Think of variations of your favorite recipes—that, in essence, is what you will frequently encounter here in this book. Neither strictly memoir nor total fiction, what you will read is auto-fiction. As you meet these curiosities, think to yourself: How could anything be more fascinating than the people we all encounter, and keep alive in our memories? Aren’t they what motivate us to continue turning the next pages in our own life book, aka our own places in the cabinets of curiosities belonging to those around us?
