According to two 2014 reports: National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIH) and National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), almost 88,000 people died from alcohol related causes, the fourth leading preventable cause of death in the United States of America, and more than half of Americans, 12 and older, are current users of Alcohol. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Positive Psychology and the therapeutic application of Mindfulness on the general population of individuals with Substance Use Disorder. The four Research Questions addressed were: One-the relationship between MBRP, Treatment as Usual (TAU) and relapse prevention; Two-the effectiveness of MBRP, when compared to TAU, when dealing with clients who have a SUD; Three-the effectiveness of MBRP, when compared to TAU, when factoring in duration of abstinence before relapse; Four-the perceived differences between Cognitive Based Relapse Prevention (CBRP), TAU, and relapse risk factors. The method was a theoretical, systematic review, a critical literature review of multiple scholarly research studies or papers. Data analysis findings were that all the treatments used; MBRP, CBRP, and TSF, were all effective. The conclusions point to the need for the client to accepting that they had a problem, development of effective coping skills, and to address more than the symptoms. Successful clients accepted that it was it was important to follow through with a relapse prevention treatment plan that addresses their specific SUD behaviors, have a long-term commitment to addressing dysfunctional thoughts, emotions. The pleasure pain theory explains many aspects of SUD’s and is a driving force of many additive behaviors.
