Synopsis

Anna Wilbey flees the England she has come to hate. She runs to her grandfather, Adam Sampson, who lives in the 'Queen of the Hill Stations'. Ootacamund, in the Nilgiri Hills of India. The trauma that besets Anna causes her to ask her 'Gramps' why she was instilled with duty and honour throughout her upbringing. The novel moves between England in the past, and India in the present. Adam can only disabuse his granddaughter of her naive idealism by telling her, and his Indian wife, the story of his life; 'A Plain Tale From the Hills'. Meanwhile, Adam's work with orphaned Dalit children leads them all into danger. Khan an Indian gangster, whose business is the abuse of vulnerable children, is a threatening presence.
