A tiny village in post World War II Japan is the backdrop for the life altering experience of a young American sailor who had a chance meeting with a blind martial arts Master. Barton's original goal was to gain the physical skills to defeat any enemy. It wasn't long until he learned that the Seiken Jitsu was much more than just fighting. It required the development of Character and an understanding of Body, Mind and Spirit to create the union of Feeling and Desire and, to see what it is True. The Master honed his abilities during World War II, seeing combat as a way to test his fighting skills; he referred to it as “the only place where I was able to use all of my abilities”. Once his system was complete, no enemy was able to touch him. There was a price to pay for this knowledge and he ultimately came to believe that the true purpose of the martial arts was much more than physical skills; it was a means to develop Character and the ability to learn how to fight so you did not have to fight. This was what the Master wanted to impart to his only student.'Lessons From a 21st Century Samurai' is the history of the Master and his student, preserved for future martial artists and for those wanting to use extreme physical training, in any form, to develop a better understanding of themselves and what their purpose in life is.
