This five-volume series is an exploration of questions that have fascinated me and scholars of all times. It’s not surprising that I have discovered only partial answers. Questions that have easy answers anyone can find are not what I have in mind. I have sought things I can believe, not because I was told to do so, but because my investigations lead me to them. Even so, they are always subject to further review. We all are defined by what we have learned and believe. We are a total of our experiences, actual and vicariously, the people we interacted with, the ideas shared, and the results of our reasoning. I early decided that I was put on this earth to use my mind to learn as much as I possibly could, by continually questioning. I believe that conviction can be traced to my study of the work of Rene Descartes when he wrote:“If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.” If you have made up your mind on something, without thorough exploration, you have closed your mind. Saying, ‘I am positive,’ frequently means, you are wrong at the top of your voice. Always leave a little crack to escape through when you see things differently. Here are some of the premises of this work.1.Looking only for agreements to a one’s position will teach you nothing.2.Books of quotations are a Liberal Arts education for the impatient.3.Questioning Beliefs is a Path to Greater Understanding.4.Laughing is preferable to complaining and far better for the soul.5.Politicians can’t be trusted – none of them.6.Whoever is the current President of the United States is fair game for ridicule if his actions and words.7.A single quotation may be of higher value to an individual than a college-level course on the subject, particularly if the quote gets the reader to think about the statement and forms his or her own opinion on the matter.8.Words in and of themselves are not indecent, nor should they be censored other than being self-censoring one’s language.9.There is not one thing that can be said that tells the whole story, and no matter how brilliantly it is crafted, not everyone will agree with its author.10.If one disagrees with a statement or finds it disgusting, this is to be expected, but hopefully, the disagreement is based on understanding, not emotions.11.If readers find nothing shocking in this work, I will be disappointed.12.Examining something even in repellant does not mean one approves of it, merely that talking about it may have benefits.13.In a way, all jokes are insensitive to someone, but if they are funny and are not intended to represent a position that belittles certain classes of people or even individuals. Political correctness is merely another name for doublethink and thought criminal, brilliantly depicted in George Orwell’s novel “1984.”14.All words were introduced by humans with some purpose in mind. As long as this purpose remains, so should the words.15.Profanity and vulgarity are in the ear of the listener.16.There are no absolute truths, but I can’t prove it.17.It is easier to adopt others’ beliefs, but that is a failure18.We were put on the earth to find out why we were put on this earth, for good reasons, we hope.19.Only little children and the elderly ask questions for the sole reason that they want to know.20.No argument will win anyone to your point of view unless they don’t have strong feelings about the subject.21.I hope my last words are a question.22.I would like to believe there is life after death, but I doubt it.23.I’ve never known an answer to the questions, ‘what good is this?’ and ‘When will I ever use it?”24.The best conversations occur when those involve mutually respect for the opinions of others.25.I could be wrong, and I am still eager to learn. Don’t scold me for my opinions. Instruct and convince me.
