Synopsis

For the gradually internationalizing European beer producing industry, Cultural Intelligence (CQ) of the CEOs is proposed as a differentiating factor leading some breweries to internationalize while others do not. A sample of 72 breweries were surveyed to discover if their CEO’s CQ could explain their propensity for export. Control variables: size of brewery, years on the job, time spent abroad and # of int’l contacts among others were included in the analysis of the brewery’s (international) operations. Significant support was found to support the hypothesis that the higher a CEO’s CQ, the more likely the CEO is to embark on an international exporting strategy. It was the first empirical study of its kind to link CEO CQ to propensity for exporting and contributes to the fields of firm internationalization, leadership effect on firm performance and cultural intelligence.
