Thirty-year-old Army Captain, Janice Longford has had enough of military life and resigns her commission in the Army to move to Dorset to renovate a dilapidated bungalow left to her by her uncle. She wants to start a new life for herself and her long-term partner, Laura. Only to find her partner has other ideas and refuses to leave Yorkshire to live in a hovel running off with her tennis coach's wife, who just happens to be Janice's superior, despised Army Major Clarissa Riley, instead. Devastated at her loss, Janice begins spending more time at the bungalow and is delighted to find, on one of her weekend visits, a vixen, and three cubs have taken up residence in the garden. When the vixen fails to return with food for her litter, Janice visits a local supermarket to buy food for the cubs, uncertain if they can survive without their mother to feed them. Intrigued by a distressed woman, Divorcee Melanie Lake, she lends money to in the store, she visits her home to find she runs a fox rescue. On discovering she is about to be evicted from her Council House, Janice invites her to move her animals to her back garden wilderness. As their friendship develops, Janice accompanies Mel one evening in releasing a fox back into the wild and they get caught in sudden thunderstorms and torrential rain, resulting in them spending a night together in Janice's bed. When Mel meets a man at the bungalow who introduces himself as Captain Longford, she assumes him to be Janice's husband and is horrified at what she has done, thinking Janice to be a married woman, blatantly cheating on her husband. Previously married to a man, Mel has never slept with a woman before and finds it difficult to accept that she could be a lesbian but doesn't wish to discuss her turmoil with Janice. Both of them have their individual reasons for keeping their lives private from each other but their lack of communication causes an unnecessary divide while they strive to overcome their differences, to try and save the fledgling relationship forming between them.
