Synopsis

Poetics & Progym I is a composition, grammar, and rhetoric course structured around Homer's Odyssey and the narrative, proverb, and anecdote stages of the progymnasmata. Composition lessons focus on outlining, summary and précis, and beginning expository and persuasive writing. Grammar lessons are applied using selections from classic literature and poems, including challenging sentence diagramming lessons. Also includes studies in poetry, literary analysis, figures of speech, and figures of description. This is the first in a series of three books for 8th grade and up. Poetics & Progym I Teaching Helps is a recommended accompaniment; it includes an extensive Answer Key. Cottage Press is dedicated to the classical liberal arts, which set a proper course for a lifetime pursuit of wisdom by teaching the student to think, to love learning, and to passionately desire truth, beauty, and goodness. Toward that end, our Language Arts books are dedicated to developing “ready scribes” (Psalm 45:1) – scholars who are able to pen pleasing and winsome themes, flowing from hearts of virtue.
