This is a story set in the late 1960s and early 1970s Joining the Royal Navy was probably one of the most important events of my life. A fair few of my contemporaries from my schooldays ended up in trouble, some in prison. Serving Queen and Country was probably the last thing that motivated me. I joined to escape the mundane boredom of life in general. I was drawn to the excitement of travelling the world. Watching ships sailing in and out of the River Mersey as a youngster fed this desire. As a 17-year-old youth, with rampant hormones raging. An ambition to have relations with as many females of a different nationality, as possible. This is closer to the main reason I entered the recruiting offices I have met people of all different classes and backgrounds. Some became lifelong friends. Often these became closer than actual family I experienced a sense of comradeship and belonging that could never come close to finding in civilian life. I met some who hated and could not handle the lifestyle and could not leave and become civilians ASAP It was a time of learning to become independent. Having many preconceptions of life knocked out of me. In addition, discovering the realities of life. Growing from innocent adolescence to worldly-wise adulthood and questionably growing up. Seeing the evil and depravity that some humans can descend to. It is a story of adventure and loss of innocence. That many ex-service personal will relate too
