Synopsis
Most people think they have a pretty good handle on the answers to their questions. Nevertheless, they have to be asked. Blood and Circuses has been a technique to keep the masses in line for centuries. The Romans did it with gladiator death to distract the average people from noticing that they were being screwed. We are a lot sneakier now. We do it with reality TV. The over-riding answer to most problems is that humans are way less than perfect; and that's putting it mildly.As of 2010 there were more than 100 million people in some kind of federal welfare program, 64 million on Social Security, 54 million on Medicare and 70 million on Medicaid. Food Stamp recipients stand at 46 million. Even if they are exaggerated, these are horrible numbers and a poor commentary on our way of life. Forward seven years and my guess is the numbers are worse.Instead of tracking those unemployed- especially since that number has so many flaws in it, why not check the percentage with jobs in the working age category (16-54)? That number is worse now than 30 years ago. Social Security numbers show that half of American workers make less than $30,000. Almost three-quarters make less than $50,000.The number of people on disability is a joke. Setting aside those who really need help, what about that healthy 6'3” guy who plays touch football on weekends? Any reason to give him a nickel? There were 51 working Americans to support every disabled person in 1968. Today, there are only 13.It now takes two people working per family to get by. You think this is a well-run government or society?The thing is, do we say that's a crime because the rich have usurped so much of the pie and our system is broken; or do we say a lot of these people are deadbeats?
