An alien starship is approaching the planet; not good news for Captain Virginia Stoll. There are already three alien species on the planet, the humans, the Arsagani, and the Magsoths, a superconducting computer race of beings. They discover the starship is incredibly ancient, so old that its origin has been lost to time. The starship has immortal alien Commanders who seem to be in charge, but Virginia finds that it is the starship itself that is really in command, and the starship needs her help. Virginia must go where the Commanders fear to go, deep inside the ship to find a missing Commander. If she succeeds she will be allowed to release all of the cryofrozen humans on one of the great Wheel human spaceships that had fled Earth, now stored in one of the vast holds of the ship. The starship has more problems than a missing Commander. Virginia and her AI companion, Genie, must face death again and again to solve problems that the immortal Commanders are afraid to face. Because of her special abilities, the starship discovers that she is unique among all the alien species the starship has encountered. It develops a new mission for her, a mission that will force Virginia to make life-changing decisions, decisions that will affect all of the lives of the scattered human colonies that fled a dying Earth.
