A SF novel of love and transformation. In Little Bird, a museum curator named Alex meets a strange woman named Sun Song Shia. Even though she’s deformed and has a remarkably foul mouth, he’s captivated. After some awkward dates, Song reveals her true nature to be that of a Polymorph Adept, which is the highest rated polymorph, able to change physical appearance at will. She greets him as a stunningly beautiful redhead, his “reward” for passing her ugly-girl test, then launches into a spiel in which she warns him that she is still evolving and doesn’t know the direction her own evolution will take. “Run,” she tells him. “Run like fucking hell.” Alex doesn’t run. He and Song fall in love, but she remains a cipher to him, not even telling him where she lives, because being a polymorph is a lot like being in witness protection. Dating a polymorph is both exhilarating and complex. Alex slowly learns of Song’s bizarre childhood in Shanghai, but at the same time she’s defensive and clearly hiding something. Song’s warning that Alex should run turns out to be prophetic, as her strange nature has a big surprise in store for both of them.
