PAPA’S COMING HOME or “father is coming back to you,” is a poignant story of a Japanese soldier in Manchuria (China) at the end of World War II longing to get home to be with his children. Its format is kamishibai (literally “paper theater”) in which the story is illustrated on one side of the paper with the story narrative (and in this case translation) written on the other side.These nineteen pages were given to my family some fteen years ago by a woman in my parents’ church in Maryville, Tennessee. Then in her 90s Grace Chapin had been with the Red Cross in Okinawa, southern Japan, following World War II and had “found” these drawings but could not remember the exact circumstances. Did she nd them in the effects of a soldier? Were they a war trophy? A souvenir? Memorabilia? A gift? She couldn’t remember. But she knew that new church members Kitty and Winton Enloe had lived in Japan for thirty years working for the Presbyterian Mission, and she asked Kitty to help return them to Japan.Kitty wrote the Japanese Social Welfare Ministry with copies of the drawings and the envelope that contained them, and asked for assistance in locating the family whose name appeared on the envelope. They quickly responded writing that with the destruction of most social and family records during the War, it was impossible to locate the family; they suggested she contact the US. Embassy in Tokyo. Instead, she gave them to her oldest son, Walter, who is a teacher at Hamline University, and who is the former headmaster of the International School in Hiroshima, Japan.Walter organized this exhibition in his role as Gordon B. Sanders Chair in Education; the pictures will be given to the citizens of Nagasaki, sister-city of St. Paul, Minnesota. Both cities are members of 2020 Vision Campaign, sponsored by Mayors of Peace, working to rid the world of nuclear weapons. This exhibition is a contribution to that noble effort to make the world a better place.
