For the majority of my fifty-seven years following Jesus, I have recorded my discoveries in a private spiritual journal. Over time, it grew into several notebooks that were eventually transferred to my computer. They contained various thoughts and insights that seemed important to my spiritual development. Some were pivotal, others less so, but I recorded them all, not knowing how God would use them in my life. All of the notes I recorded were meant for personal use, and as my way of showing God, I was paying attention.MMany years ago, at an important junction in my life, God led me to reexamine the theological knowledge I had accumulated over time. I instinctively knew that the huge volume of information I had recorded could include a mixture of truth and error. I felt certain that my teachers were theologically sound and had the best of intentions, but they were human, so it was possible. That led me to re-visit the content I had collected from a multitude of sermons, Sunday School classes, books, tapes, Bible studies, conferences, and retreats. A commercial airliner that’s off course one degree for an hour is a long way off course, but not as much as it would be if it continued one degree off course for a ten-hour flight. That doesn’t put the pilot in danger of crashing, but since he has trustworthy instruments, he should not have allowed an incorrect course to continue without correction. Being off course in one’s spiritual life is also a very real possibility, so I needed to check my theological compass. The first-century believers became my example even though their teacher was the Apostle Paul. In Acts 17:11, we read; “...they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." (NIV) I became very motivated to re-examine all the Doctrine, Biblical principles, practical applications, and teaching I had received. The thoughts in this book are my insights as “I checked the Scriptures to see if what I had been taught accurately represented the words of the Bible.”As you might guess, it led me to some different conclusions about a number of things. Not once during my research did I think that the new insights would turn into a book. However, now in the autumn of my life, I believe the Holy Spirit has prompted me to stop resisting the requests of my family and friends. For years, they have been encouraging me to write about the topics I speak about in one-on-one meetings, conferences, and retreats. After I relented and began to write, something clicked inside me, and now I am doing so with enormous joy. Because the information was so key in deepening my own heart connection with Jesus, I now feel compelled to humbly offer it for your consideration. The hundreds of Microsoft Word files on my computer would be more than enough for five or six books, however, for this one; I believe the Lord has led me to choose the topics listed in the table of contents. As a fan of C. S. Lewis, one statement he made represents the spirit in which I write. He said, “We need to be reminded more than instructed.” My intent is to remind the reader of what Scripture says or does not say. As you read these “Uncommon Thoughts about Commonly Held Beliefs,” I ask you to keep Acts 17:11 in mind. The Bible is our only standard for truth, not someone's opinion. Therefore, I urge you to compare my thoughts as well as your own theology with the Bible. Even though like me, you believe you have been well taught, my prayer is that these thoughts will provoke you to search the Scriptures regarding the teaching of any man, and that includes this one.
