I have been asked why on earth I'd want to write a book of poetry? A good question, but not an easy one to answer. When the idea first arose, I thought “Poetry, me. Don’t be ridiculous”, less than fulfilling school room memories filling my head. However, after some thought, I decided to press on for three reasons.Firstly, I believe that almost everyone is capable of rather more than they think possible. That if we could each find just a little time, and enough space, we could all develop a broader “hinterland” for ourselves - something to insulate us from the banalities of day-to-day living. In coming to this view, it suddenly seemed important to broaden my own horizons before it became too late. Poetry seemed a perfect stepping off point for me on this journey and so, with some trepidation, I began to write!Having started, I found the writing process to be very cathartic. It was calming, almost hypnotic, to see those words which churn within my head begin to slowly form orderly patterns across a blank page – and, in releasing these words, the tensions behind them also began to ease. The process was, however, also more than a little unsettling - as poking a stick into uncomfortably dark corners can be! However, as the “neat prints in the snow” began to form, as Ted Hughes so eloquently put it, suddenly, magically it felt like the right thing to have done. Finally, for me the words just keep on coming. At this moment it is a somewhat relentless! This being the case, I felt it worth trying to capture some of these words before they were lost for ever. Whether you agree with on this me may be a very different story. So why don't you have a read and make up your own mind? Graham Alexander Ireland, September 2019
