This book attempts to answer the question: “Where do differential equations come from?” The reader is probably aware that differential equations are found in science and engineering. Mathematical texts rarely derive the differential equation for a specific application. Instead, they consider the differential equation as simply a law of nature. The goal of this intermediate level text is to provide the necessary methods for solving differential equations found in important applications. The book is divided into three parts.1. Theoretical background and methods - Essential theorems are proved with a minimal level of abstraction. The aim is to provide the mathematical justification for the methods.2. Numerical methods - A complete derivation for multi-step methods is provided in vector form. Other common methods are also discussed but their derivation and analysis is omitted.3. Applications - Differential equations are derived from first principles. Applications include elementary particle dynamics, mechanical systems, viscoelasticity, electrical systems, andequations of warfare. This text should be considered as a reference guide rather than a standard textbook on the subject. The reader should have a background in advanced calculus and linear algebra. The necessary results from real and functional analysis are provided.
