A sequel to 'A Cheyenne Trilogy: Between the Rivers', this continues the story of See the Dark, a young but flawed Suhtai Cheyenne warrior, and his friendship with the deadly White Mountain Apache, Viajero. Their quests for ponies and guns bring them into extreme danger as they plunge deep into enemy country. Back at home, the newly established Forked Lightning Women soldier society struggles to overturn traditions and tribal attitudes that hold them back; they, too, long for action and eventually find it on a long and bitter war trail that brings tragedy. Into this intense mix, comes a new experience for the Suhtai - direct contact with whites. Trust is in short supply all round, especially as See the Dark's mother knows a secret about them. All three trails - male warriors, women soldiers and whites - eventually cross; forged by battle, betrayal, blood and love. Stretching from the edge of the Rocky Mountains on the grassy Great Plains down to the arid flatness of the Llano Estacado in Texas, the action swirls across the American West of the mid-Nineteenth Century. These are the early years of the Plains Indian Wars and the tentative first steps of the Euro-Americans to link the continent from coast to coast. The Suhtai Cheyenne must meet the dangers from their own kind as well as encroaching whites and survive.
