Synopsis
Time Mapping was conceived as a revolutionary new approach to teaching the basic rules of grammar. I developed the idea while working for International House in Egypt in the 1970s. Over my teaching career, myself and certain of my colleagues, have used the concept with excellent results in a wide variety of classroom situations, from university lecture halls to "one-to-one" private classes, covering all levels ranging from true beginners to the most advanced learners.Most of the students who have been taught, using the principals of Time Mapping, have been Egyptian and French, though during my time at I.H. Hastings, classes consisted of students from every corner of the planet. Many of my students expressed interest in buying a book on the subject and some of them, on their own initiative, used their computers to create grammatical time maps for distribution to other members of the group.Many of the problems experienced by language learners stem from mother tongue interference, and additional confusion comes from the practice of describing most European languages in Latin terms, often applying the same term to totally different usages in different languages. By studying the nature of our perception of time, re-describing the tenses and comparing them with those of the students' own languages they may avoid some of the pitfalls of direct translation in which so many of their problems are rooted.The main aims of the book are: to provide, not only students, but both teacher trainers and trainee teachers, with a clearer understanding of the function of grammar; explain in simple language, the meaning of the Latin terms traditionally employed to describe time sequences; come to the rescue of those students of English who have insufficient knowledge to escape from a labyrinth of words which appear to change their meaning at every turn.
