Synopsis

An Omnibus of Dime Novels from the Nineteenth Century.

Once avidly devoured by youth across the States, these short novels are home to one of the greatest heroes in American literature, though his thrilling exploits are now sadly largely lost to time. Once upon a time, the adventures of Deadwood Dick, outlaw and Prince of the Road, were read by millions of boys, who awaited his next adventure hungrily.

Originally published as weekly dime novels, these short novels are now being republished in a series of volumes, each containing 4 or 5 works by Edward L. Wheeler. Now, Wheeler's later novels are presented, many of which have not been republished since their first appearance in the 1880's. The eponymous hero makes an appearance in at least one story in each of these continuing volumes, though quite a few star other characters.

This Volume, the 23rd in the series, contains the dime novels:

Deadwood Dick's Diamonds; Or, The Mystery of Joan Porter.
When Bill Bird pawns a fortune in diamonds for a paltry poker game stake he gambles away all the money and commits suicide out of despair, but not before he leaves the pawnbroker ticket to Deadwood Dick and extracts from him the promise to investigate the mystery of his former lover, Joan Porter, who he claims is an impostor. Accompanied by Calamity Jane, Dick sets out to fulfil Bill's final wish, uncovering a villainous conspiracy on the way.

Seakskin Sam, The Sparkler; Or, The Tribunal of Ten.
Falsely accused of murder and being the captain of the murderous gang known as the Tribunal of Ten, Sealskin Sam must bring the gang to justice in order to prove his own innocence.

Kit Keith, The Revenue Spotter; Or, The Big Bag at Dark Run.
The settlements of Jarvishaven and Dark Run are a hot-bed of moonshiners and wreckers, commanded by the scheming Captain Cussick. Kit Keith, rising star of the revenue staff, arrives in Jarvishaven to root out the criminals, but he has his own reasons for journeying there.

Banty, The Denver Bootblack; Or, Doc Derringer, The Dark Lantern Detective.
A spate of burglaries in Denver are leaving the police baffled, forcing the chief to call in the best detective in the city, Jack Derringer, and set him on the case. Ably assisted by the sharp-witted young bootblack, Banty, Doc Derringer uncovers dark plots in the highest levels of society as his investigation proceeds.

Bullion Bret; Or, The Giant Grip of Git-Thar.
When the religious leader of Git-Thar chooses Virgie Jamison to be his thirteenth wife he refuses to accept her rejection, and makes plans to possess her by any means. It falls to Bullion Bret to foil the elder's designs, while dealing with those irate citizens who have mistaken him for a famous thief who some time before had robbed the town.
