This book surveys the evolution of American politics since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in New York and shows how a series of fateful choices by its political élites, and in particular by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, prepare the way for the most stunning event in recent US history: Donald J. Trump’s electoral victory over Hillary Clinton in the contest for the Presidency of the United States. To try to glimpse into the future evolution of the US system of government we adopt a three-pronged approach: we analyse who was seduced by Donald Trump’s ‘America First!’ message into voting for him, how his tenure in the White House is situated in the recurrent cycles of American Presidential politics that have engendered six political Republics and six political Party systems since the 1787 Philadelphia Congress, and the unique way he has structured his Cabinet and Administration during his first two years in power, as he attempts to transform himself from President of the United States (POTUS 1.0) to Protector of the United States (POTUS 2.0). President Trump’s position at the beginning oof 2019 is much more complex than it seems. Donald Trump and his allies have now set siege to multicultural, open, participative, meritocratic, democratic America as they attempt to transform it into a hyper-nationalist authoritarian oligarchy. To do so, they must fight and win a seven-front war unfolding across three arenas: internal, interior, and external. For this, they must learn how to simultaneously deploy three tactics: circumvallation, intravallation, and contravallation. Circumvallation is designed to force in the long term the surrender of the American society that emerged, developed, triumphed, matured, deepened, and expanded during the first six American Republics, and that is now fighting back against Trump and his allies by means of the Culture and Media Wars; contravallation aims to stave off and defeat in the medium term any external threats, represented by the Immigration, Terrorist, and Cyber Wars; and finally, and every bit as importantly, intravallation has as objective to put down in the short term internal revolts emanating from within Trump’s very own forces and Executive apparatus, as exemplified by the Collusion and ‘Deep State’ Wars. Visualising this complex, multidimensional strategic terrain is vital if we want to grasp both the nature and extent of the changes implemented by President Trump in the transition from Team Trump 2.0 to Team Trump 3.0, and from his own dramaturgic self-re-presentation as POTUS 1.0 to that of POTUS 2.0 – that is, from President to Protector of the United States.
