The English Foxhound is one of the four foxhound breeds of dog that were specifically developed to be able to hunt foxes by their scent alone. The breed was created in the latter half of the 16th century as a result of the depletion of deer in England. Traditionally the English royalty and nobility hunted deer throughout the country for both sport and food. During these deer hunts the nobility and royalty used both Deerhounds and Staghounds. During the reign of Henry VIII, there was a common consensus that a new prey was needed – and the fox was selected. Hence, the development of the English Foxhound began. The English Foxhound was developed by carefully mixing the Greyhound, the Fox Terrier and the Bulldog. The Greyhound gave the breed speed, the Fox Terrier gave the breed a strong hunting instinct and the Bulldog gave the breed a tenacious nature. English Foxhounds have always been used to hunt foxes over Greyhounds, as the English Foxhound it is believed that it provides a more sporting chase and hunt.
