Synopsis

There are times in history when major changes disrupt the normal tempo of life by way of innovations and cause incredible upheavals. One such time was the advent of computers. The change came slowly, at first by way of kits that one would go to buy at “electronics”shops. Then there were Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and their associates who put their names to the world renowned technology associated with their companies, Microsoft and Apple. That’s when students like me would look for the auctions that sprung up to bid for choice computers at an affordable price. Countries all over the world would compete for the technology that would create computers, from advanced Western Europe to Russia and China that were undergoing a change from communism and closed societies to openly competitive in the world markets. I had the good fortune to be involved in computer development and manufacture at just the right time in order to travel the world on a mission. In the process of opening markets I also witnessed incredible changes that were taking place in these countries. It was such an electrifying phenomenon that my wife and I spent over twenty five years in every continent, from China to India, Australia and Brazil, South Africa and Europe, treated everywhere as welcome friends. In China, we spent a week at Chairman Mao’s compound in Shanghai, with the proviso that, if Deng Xiao Ping, Chairman after Mao decides to show up during our stay, we would be relocated in a hurry . At the former British club in Beijing, we found that our room key was never in our possession, but permanently under the watchful eye of a lady at the end of the hall. This means that the room was never locked and we had a surprise on the second night of our stay, despite assurances that it would never happen. Thus, we put together our memories of spicy stories in this volume and we named it: “Your room key is at the end of the hall and other spicy tales from the dawn of computers.” Robert A. and Bery Sanford
