This book is a brilliant, witty and cleverly written snapshot of campus life in an IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) - India's merit-based elite bastion of super-high achievers - with characters and typical situations dissected and described in keen detail. What it is not - a mathematical treatise on the Fourier Transform in the area of harmonic analysis. Nor is it a book on how to get admitted to an IIT.The title is a play on words and refers to "The 4-year Transform" undergone by IIT undergraduates. Unlike typical pot-boilers in the campus-life genre the book does not attempt to create phony situations with gratuitous sex and violence or develop an artificial plot scaffolding on which to hang fake characters. It is a honest-to-goodness down-to-earth account of not just life at an IIT but life in general - we get out of life what we put into it, but the more we try to make sense of it all the more pointless it seems.
