Synopsis

The Debt of Ricardo is a riddle within a mystery within a cardigan.

It is a stupid, stupid book – yet it is bizarrely captivating. It has no plot – yet it is full of plot twists. It took the co-authors seven-and-a-half years to write – yet it could’ve been finished in a week.

When people ask the authors, Nick Bendel and Buck Mann, what The Debt of Ricardo is about, their reply is always the same: “We don’t know.”

In confusion, people then ask: “Well, what happens in the book?” Bendel and Mann reply: “So many things happen. And yet – nothing happens.”

How is any of this possible?

Before they started writing The Debt of Ricardo, the authors agreed on two things. First, they would take turns writing paragraphs – Bendel would write paragraph one, Mann paragraph two, Bendel paragraph three, etc. Second, they would never, ever discuss what the book was about.

Never.

As paragraph after paragraph was completed, Bendel and Mann struggled to work out what any of it meant.

They knew The Debt of Ricardo was an action-packed farce that captured the zeitgeist of the time. Yet they didn’t understand what was happening. Nor did they understand what ‘zeitgeist’ meant.
