Synopsis

In volume one of Nation Builders: A Tale of Five Families, William (Bill) Phillips comes to America with his parents. He later joins the throngs of humanity seeking gold in California. By the end of chapter one, in 1851, William Phillips has arrived in Salem, the fabled Willamette Valley, Oregon Territory. This same valley eventually becomes the destination of the Roland family where these two families, Phillips and Roland, become involved and connected through marriage.In volume two of Nation Builders: A Tale of Five Families, William (Bill) Phillips is living in Salem, Oregon Territory and working as a partner with the Starr Brothers. The following chapters, beginning with chapter two, introduce the Roland family of Kentucky, later Illinois, and eventually, Oregon Territory into this saga of western settlement and Nation Building. Three more families, through marriage, will become involved, as well. Rockfellow, Meacham, and Foster. All instrumental in settling and building the towns, mines, a foundry, farms, shops, and a park. Even making it possible for the railroad to cross the Blue Mountains of the fabulous Northwest. All this by simply recognizing and taking advantage of opportunities as they came their way.The Native Americans were a concern to these families. Sometimes helping and sometimes mistrusting each other, the two nations at times clashed and some of these families found themselves caught up in more than one of these tense incidents and even skirmishes.
